Letters To The Editor ••••••••• ■•••••••** Dear Editor: A truly fascinating and entang ling trip was my walk, or as I later found climb, up old Grey beard Mountain. Perhaps the most amusing part of it all, was the fact that, unknowingly, my father and I were taking a hike of over 6000 feet. As we began our jaunt, we fol lowed a manor road. The very ap propriately set mountain cottages on either side, provided a setting more glorious than we had ever witnessed before. With each step our hopes were more inspired, with each turn, our imagination grew. Unfortunately, however, while our knowledge of mountain life was nil, our interpretation of distance had risen beyond account. After a short period of time it became quite evident that what I had formerly termed as a walk was a climb that gave me every opportunity to familiarize myself with the forest. When we had traveled for ap proximately 50 minutes, my father and I drew nigh to a mountain stream enclosing us, and in my short rest, I asked my tired father, “Do you think we’ve climbed a 100 ft. yet? Practically breathless he replied, “Whv, I (ah) - think - so - maybe 150 ft.” Indeed, “maybe,” for by then, little did we know we were well over 3000. Nevertheless in our earnestness we still trod the path and by one hr. and 30 minutes, we could see near glimpses of the top. At last our climax had come, and alas! we saw the “Top o the Mountain.” Looking over proved to he quite a drop, never the less a sight yet to be treasured forever. It was one of the most inspiring views both of us had ever seen, yet too great for what we had worked. After our glimpse we were ready to descend and found this more strenous than the reversed stage. As we began, it proved a continuous run, of|gn uncontrol lable by force. While in this stage of our trip we met a small boy accompanied by his two younger sisters. Although by this time we had made quite a downfall. I pleasantly asked, “Did you ever visit the top of this mountain, son?” “Sure,” he said, “all the time.” At that point I noticed his sister give a slight nod in the negative response, insinuating in bluffed statement. Slightly dubious, I a gain remarked, “Well then, what’s up there?” In short breath he gave his final answer, “Oh—lots of trees and climbin.” In his few, yet simple words, he had fully described it, for now if ever, I knew the full convenience of an elevator. Not to be mistaken, I felt like one. Well, it’s over now, but its memo ry shall remain always, while the beautiful panorama from the top, combined with the hardy climb and the quick descent provide a trip to truly the “Land of the Sky.” Suzanne Hefner Look Who’s Here!
